A Teen’s Guide to Newport, RI: Mansions, Eats, and Coastal Adventures

If you’re a teen looking for a mix of history, scenic views, and good food, Newport, Rhode Island, is the place to be. Whether you’re visiting for the day or making a weekend trip out of it, this coastal town has something for everyone. I’ve been to Newport a few times, and each time I find something new to love. Here’s THE guide to making the most out of your trip.

As a history girl, I could not help myself, and did some research on the history of this eye-catching destination.

A Little History

Newport was founded in 1639 and quickly became an important colonial seaport, known for its religious tolerance and thriving trade. By the 18th century, it was one of the busiest ports in the American colonies. During the American Revolution, Newport was occupied by the British from 1776 to 1779, which significantly impacted the town’s economy.

In the 19th century, Newport transformed into a summer retreat for America’s wealthiest families, leading to the construction of the famous Gilded Age mansions, like The Breakers and Marble House. These extravagant homes were built by powerful industrialists, including the Vanderbilt family, and showcased the lavish lifestyles of the era.

Today, Newport is known for its sailing culture, historic preservation, and beautiful coastal views

The Must-See Mansions

One of the coolest things about Newport is its historic mansions. I know—when you hear “mansion tour,” you might think of something your parents would drag you to, but trust me, these places are beautiful and are the most ideal picturesque landscape.

  • The Breakers – This is the Vanderbilt family’s summer home, and it could be classified as a palace. The grand staircases, chandeliers, and ocean views make it feel like something out of a movie. There’s even a cool audio tour that lets you explore at your own pace without the nagging of big groups and tour guides!
  • Marble House – Another Vanderbilt mansion, but this one truly exhibits the gilded-age vibe. The inside is decorated with gold, and there’s even a Chinese Tea House outside where you can grab a drink and enjoy the ocean breeze.

If you like aesthetic Instagram shots, these places are gold (just choose a cuter outfit then I did!!). Plus, walking through these homes really gives you a sense of what life was like for the wealthy in the 1800s.

Food Spots You Can’t Miss

Exploring can make you hungry, and Newport has some awesome food spots, most being very affordable!

  • Mission – If you love burgers and fries, this place is a must. Their burgers are super juicy, and they have some of the best hot dogs around. Perfect for a quick, casual bite.
  • Flo’s Clam Shack – This spot is a classic for seafood lovers. The fried clam strips and lobster rolls are top-notch, and you get to eat with a view of the ocean.
  • The Corner Cafe – A relaxed local spot, an amazing breakfast place might I say! Highly recommend the avocado toast and pancakes as well as the amazing coffee!!

Fun Things to Do

Aside from the mansions and food, Newport’s natural beauty could not be ignored. As a nature lover, here are a few of my favorite activities:

  • Cliff Walk – This is a beautiful 3.5-mile path along the ocean with insane views. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and see some of the mansions from the outside without paying for a tour.
  • Bowen’s Wharf – This area is filled with cute shops, ice cream stands, and boats. Even if you’re not into shopping, it’s a fun place to walk around.
  • Easton’s Beach – If the weather is nice, spending time at the beach is always a good idea. You can swim, tan, or just relax by the water.

I must add the architecture in Newport is stunning! There are beautiful “old money” homes on every corner, which is very pleasing to the eye!

Final Thoughts

Newport is truly a beauty! Whether you’re into history, food, or just exploring new places, there’s something here for everyone. Plus, it’s super photogenic, so if you’re into taking pictures, you’ll have plenty of content for your feed. Yet, it is still a cozy destination. Just make sure to dress warm in the cooler months!
